Hey cool. formal invitation is required only if you are travelling on business. But for tourist the Consulate do not ask for any invitation. All you have to have is Hotel booking, return ticket and financial supporting doents. Give them a covering letter stating about your background and the purpose of visit explaining the tour itinerary and very importantly you have to convince the visa officer that you will come back to Malaysia after your short stay in China. Better check with the Consulate directly. All the best.
