Whats the difference between an overdrive pedal and a distortion pedal?

i have a electric guitar and im thinking of getting a pedal. iwant a sound like EVH or vai. i only want to spend 50-160 australian dollars. people have said to get a distortion or overdrive pedal. which one is better. and what sort should i get considering in my price limit???
